Council Meeting

14 May 2019

Item No:         C0519(1) Item 12

Subject:         Mayoral Minute: Condolence Motion Father John Pearce

From:             The Mayor, Councillor Darcy Byrne

Motion:

THAT Council write a letter of condolence to Father John Pearce’s brother, Peter Pearce and his family, expressing our sadness on the passing of his brother, Father John Pearce, and our thanks for his contribution to the inner west community.

Background

Sadly, Father John Pearce passed away over the weekend. Father John was the former Parish Priest at St Brigid’s Catholic Church in Marrickville and a founder of the Multi-faith Round Table in Marrickville. He is survived by two brothers and a sister.

Father John Pearce moved to Marlborough, New Zealand in January 2017 following the Kaikoura earthquakes. He had dedicated his recent years to working with the upper South Island with communities impacted upon by the earthquakes.

He was one of the instigators behind a vigil in Blenheim to honour the victims and families of the Christchurch Mosque Shootings

A Vigil Mass will be celebrated at St. Brigid’s Marrickville at 7:00pm on Tuesday 14 May, with a burial mass at St Brigids on Wednesday 15 May at 11am.

His passing has left the communities of both Marrickville and Marlborough in shock, with an outpouring of grief and thanks for the contribution John had made to their lives.

Parishioners have praised him as “a wonderful leader for the church and the community more broadly,” and “a true Ambassador for community and kindness.”

Father John Pearce clearly left a legacy of leadership, kindness and forgiveness wherever he was, and will be greatly missed by the church and the community.

Council Meeting

14 May 2019

Item No:         C0519(1) Item 13

Subject:         Mayoral Minute: Pacific Test Invitational Support

From:             The Mayor, Councillor Darcy Byrne

Motion:

THAT Council:

1.   Endorse and welcome the sixth Pacific Test Invitational at Leichhardt Oval on 22 June 2019 and agree to work in partnership with the National Rugby League and Wests Tigers to promote the games and associated events;

2.   Make use of one of Council’s access days at the Actors Centre in the Leichhardt Italian Forum to allow the NRL to host the Pacific Youth Summit if dates are available;

3.   Promote the invitational and associated events through Council’s communications channels such as social media, the Courier page and, if timely, the Community Newsletter; and

4.   Approach Palace Cinemas to request assistance in the screening of a mid-week screening of a pacific short movie evening.

Background

On 22 June this year Leichhardt Oval will play host to the sixth Pacific Test Invitational. The competition will features the inaugural women’s match between Papua New Guinea and Fiji, along with two men’s matches featuring Fiji vs. Lebanon and Samoa vs. Papua New Guinea.

It’s great news that Test rugby league is finally coming to Leichhardt Oval. While other suburban grounds are falling apart at the seams, the playing surface at Leichhardt Oval is world-class and is attracting more and more top-flight football.

It’s also very heartening to be able to host the first ever women’s test to be played between two Pacific nations.

The NRL is also proposing a range of possible events in the lead up to the match, including working with local high schools on a Pacific schools blitz on Tuesday 18  June, a Pacific Junior Touch Day with the local primary schools and a screening of pacific short films and documentaries on Wednesday 19 June, and a Pacific Youth Summit on Friday 21 June.

The NRL has requested that Council provide whatever support we can to the delivery of this exciting program that promotes healthy activity and cultural diversity.

One of the best ways Council can do this is to help promote the events through Council channels, including social media, the Courier page and the Community Newsletter if it will be distributed at an appropriate time.

Council also has access to the Theatre currently leased by the Actors Centre in the Italian Forum free of charge for a number of events each year. I would like to make one of those days available to host the Youth Summit, if dates can be aligned between the NRL and the Actors Centre management.
