Council Meeting

25 June 2019

Item No:         C0619(2) Item 10

Subject:         Mayoral Minute: Gas Heating Safety

From:             The Mayor, Councillor Darcy Byrne

Motion:

THAT Council promote the safe use of gas heating in homes this winter, with an information page on Council’s website which refers to the NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Health and NSW Fair Trading information, and promotion through Council’s Social Media and weekly Inner West Courier page.

Background

As we move into the colder weather, it’s important to remember that heating the house, while essential, can provide safety problems of which our community should be aware. Gas heating, in particular, can be dangerous if old or makeshift heaters are used or the heaters are not maintained properly. Dubbed the ‘silent killer’ carbon monoxide is found in fumes produced  by gas burning appliances. It can leak from faulty heaters and can be lethal as it can’t be seen and has no smell.

In recent years there have been multiple fatalities and other permanent injuries as a result of improperly installed and maintained gas heaters in homes across Australia. Earlier this month a family of seven from Sydney's east were taken to hospital after a carbon monoxide leak that was traced to their pool heater. Old un-flued gas heaters may not meet current emission standards. Un-flued gas heaters draw air from within the room and emit combustion products back into the same space. Gas heaters must be professionally installed and serviced by a qualified gasfitter. Australian authorities recommend having gas heaters serviced at a minimum of every two years.

NSW Fire and Rescue provides information on safe use of heaters and open fires at https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/page.php?id=9201

NSW Health provides a simple checklist to help ensure safety at https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/news/Pages/20180625_01.aspx and further information on how to safely heat your home with gas heaters at https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment/factsheets/Pages/unflued-gas-heaters.aspx

NSW Fair Trading also provides a fact sheet about safety with gas appliances at https://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/buying-products-and-services/product-and-service-safety/gas-safety

Council Meeting

25 June 2019

Item No:         C0619(2) Item 11

Subject:         Mayoral Minute: Thank you to Mr Michael Tzimoulas

From:             The Mayor, Councillor Darcy Byrne

Motion:

THAT Council note the contributions of Deputy General Manager, Mr Michael Tzimoulas during a challenging period in the history and formation of the Inner West Council and thank Mr Tzimoulas for his professionalism, expertise and support during the two and a half years he has served as Deputy General Manager and Chief Financial Officer of Inner West Council.

Background

As of last Friday, Mr Michael Tzimoulas completed his employment with Council after two and a half years as our Deputy General Manager and Chief Financial Officer. I would like to extend the thanks of Councillors, staff and the community for the service Mr Tzimoulas has offered.

When Michael joined Inner West Council, just six months after the amalgamation of Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville councils, he was faced with two monumental tasks – making order out of the merged budget and technologies of the new council. In his 31 months with Council he has overseen the merging and ordering the finances of the three former Councils into a new and cohesive Inner West Council budget.

As the Deputy General Manager overseeing Information and Communications Technology, Michael has also been at the helm of the Tech One implementation, the new integrated management suite which places Council in a strong position to deliver higher quality services and infrastructure. With over 20 years’ experience, Mr Tzimoulas came to Council having contributed 13 years to American Express, wanting to make a contribution to public service.

Michael’s financial expertise has been of great benefit to Inner West Council as it has progressed through its formation and we are truly grateful that he made the step from private sector to public at a time when his business skills were greatly needed in the Inner West.

On behalf of everyone at Council we would like to wish him the very best in his future endeavors.
