Item No:         C0420(2) Item 13

Subject:         Mayoral Minute: Anzac Day

From:             The Mayor, Councillor Darcy Byrne

Motion:

THAT Council thank the:

1.    Publicans from The Royal Hotel, Leichhardt, The Salisbury Hotel, Stanmore, and the Unity Hall Hotel, Balmain, who hosted three improvised ANZAC Day ceremonies on 25 April 2020;

2.    Three buglers, Louise Horwood, David Young and Sarah Brown, who played The Last Post at the three improvised ANZAC Day ceremonies on 25 April 2020; and

3.    Balmain-Rozelle RSL sub-Branch, RSL NSW and the Leichhardt Celebrity Brass Band for their assistance with the three improvised ANZAC Day ceremonies on 25 April 2020.

Background

This year, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of Dawn Services at Loyalty Square in Balmain, Ashfield Park and Petersham Town Hall. The community still wanted to pay their respects to all Australians who have served and died in war and on operational service.

Three local publicans were contacted and matched with a bugler who played the Last Post at 6am on ANZAC Day and the community was encouraged to go to the front of their property and light a candle in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
