Background
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is a United Nations recognised day observed annually on 21 March.
On that day in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid pass laws in Sharpeville, South Africa.
To commemorate the day, the Inner West Multicultural Network is organising the inaugural “Inner West March and Festival for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination”.
The Inner West Multicultural Network is a network of 120 civil society organisations and is supported by Inner West Council.
The goal of the event is twofold: it aims to remind people of racial discrimination’s negative consequences and also encourage people to remember their obligation and determination to eliminate racial discrimination.
The march will commence at Enmore Park at 10am on 21 March and will travel to Addison Road Community Centre.
Former Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Tim Soutphommasane is due to speak at the event.
