Council Meeting

18 February 2025

Item No:              C0225(1) Item 75

Subject:              Mayoral Minute: Conversion of Camperdown Westconnex site to housing

From:                  The Mayor, Councillor Darcy Byrne

MOTION

1.   That Council welcome and endorse the proposal from the NSW Government to convert the former Westconnex dive site on Parramatta Road Camperdown to 500 homes, including 200 government owned rental properties to be made available and below market cost to essential workers.

2.   That Council write to the Premier, relevant Ministers and Landcom offering Council’s active assistance in the planning and development of the project.

Background

On Monday 10 February the NSW Government joined with Inner West Council to announce the proposed conversion of the former Westconnex dive site on Parramatta Road in Camperdown to a mixed use residential development, including a total of approximately 500 new homes, 200 of which are to be made available at below market rent to essential workers.

The project is being undertaken by the NSW Government agency Landcom, with the title for the 200 rental homes for essential workers to be retained by the Government.

The site was identified for conversion to housing through the NSW Government’s land audit.

This outcome follows advocacy and previous resolutions by Inner West Council seeking increased residential density on the site from that originally indicated (approximately 100 homes).

There is a desperate need to increase housing supply and the delivery of more affordable rental properties for essential workers in the Inner West.

This sort of mixed housing, including government owned homes, and homes for rent in the private market, located nearby to services, transport and employment opportunities is precisely the kind of development we need to address the housing crisis and to rejuvenate Parramatta Road.
