Prepared By: James Nguyen - Traffic Engineer
Authorised By: Manod Wickramasinghe - Traffic and Transport Planning Manager
RECOMMENDATION
That temporary ‘Keep Clear’ linemarking be introduced on Marrickville Road at Silver Street (eastbound lane) and ‘No Parking 6am-10am Mon-Fri’ restrictions be introduced on Marrickville Road, opposite Silver Street replacing 4x 1/4P restrictions, to reduce congestion on Marrickville Road, improve bus reliability and journey times and make right turns into Silver Street safer and more efficient. |
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE
This report supports the following strategic directions contained within Council’s Community Strategic Plan:
2: Liveable, connected neighbourhoods and transport |
|
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Transport for NSW (Transport) has identified increased traffic congestion westbound on Marrickville Road caused by vehicles turning right into Silver Street at an unsignalised filter turn.
Transport proposes to introduce temporary parking restrictions during weekday AM peak times to reduce congestion on Marrickville Road, improve bus reliability and journey times and make right turns into Silver Street safer and more efficient.
BACKGROUND
Vehicles turning right from Marrickville Road into Silver Street are slowing traffic by creating queues on Marrickville Road, particularly during busy morning peak period.
These queues affect bus reliability and journey times for drivers.
The following temporary changes on Marrickville Road near Silver Street are requested:
a) Four westbound P1/4 parking spaces be converted into a No Parking zone between 6am to 10am weekdays
b) Keep Clear pavement markings added at the intersection of Marrickville Road and Silver Street
These changes will remain in place for one year after which traffic conditions will be evaluated to make further decisions.
Please see the image below showing the location of the proposed changes.

DISCUSSION
Consultation Approach
Transport consulted with local businesses between Tuesday 14 January and Friday 31 January 2025.
Community notifications were delivered to nearby properties including approximately 150 businesses by a professional distribution company and the changes were exhibited on Transport’s Inner West portal.
The consultation program consisted of the following activities:
· Letterbox drop of 262 notifications to businesses and residents on Marrickville Road between Illawarra Road and Victoria Road, Marrickville
· Publication of the proposed changes and a copy of the notification on Transport’s Inner West portal
· Installation of corflute signage in the area with a map and summary of the changes and project contact details.
· A 24/7 phone number and monitored email address to receive feedback, answer any questions and provide the community with more information.
· Doorknock of businesses in the distribution area to discuss the proposed changes, provide in-person information, discuss concerns, and gather feedback.
Copies of community consultation materials and map of notification distribution and doorknock area have been included in Attachment 1.
Consultation Outcomes
Zero (0) written submissions were received from the community on the proposed temporary changes during the consultation period.
Verbal feedback received from some stakeholders during a doorknock of approximately 30 businesses indicated an overall neutral sentiment regarding the impact of parking changes and support of initiatives to improve traffic flow.
Pending approval, Transport for NSW would notify nearby residents and businesses via letterbox drop ahead of the changes being implemented.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS
There are no financial implications associated with the implementation of the proposed recommendations outlined in the report.
